Incorporating Flash with Daylight - Finding the Balance
January 4, 2025
Join us for a two-part workshop focused on the varied uses of flash in an outdoor setting. You’ll learn how to use fill flash to soften harsh shadows on a sunny day, as well as how a hard light can add contrast and drama to a scene on an overcast day to make your subject stand out from the environment.
This workshop will be comprised of two parts, beginning with a morning lesson held at The Light Room, where we will discuss the many ways one might wish to incorporate a strobe into existing light outdoors. We’ll also cover the use of High-Speed Sync, and when it’s appropriate to ensure you are using an appropriate shutter speed for your subject.
Following the classroom discussion, we will break for lunch and reconvene at 3PM at a waterfront location just a few miles away to put into practice what we learned that morning!
In order to get the most from this class, one should already be proficient with the manual use of one’s camera, using shutter speed, aperture and ISO to obtain a proper exposure. One should also have an understanding of the basics of off-camera flash.
Equipment Required: any DSLR or mirrorless camera with hotshoe (top-mounted flash port)
Recommended (Optional) Equipment: your choice of battery-operated flash, its trigger, its stand, as well as your favorite selection of modifiers. Jonathan will have a variety of modifiers (all Bowens-mount) on-hand for anyone who wishes to try them out as well!
